On How a Pixar Movie Changed our Life
*contains spoilers to the movie “Up”*
The Movie of our Life
When we first watched the movie Up, I just cried for the opening scene. Just cried and cried and cried, because it was like watching the movie of our life.
Brian and I met when I was 15 and he was 14, and we were great friends! Brian got my weird silly sense of humor. We didn’t start dating until I was 20, but when we first starting dating it took about three weeks for us to know that we would be together forever.
We got married quite young (I was 23 and Brian was 22), I worked full time while Brian attended grad school. We always knew that we were going to have kids, it was just a matter of when and how many. So we would spend our times planning for our future. Finally, Brian was done school and had gotten a job across the country so we moved without much notice to a place where we had never been, and didn’t know a person. We could finally start our family, or so we thought.

The first two minutes is basically our story
Tragedy as a Catalyst for Change
Sadly after two miscarriages we found out that our dream family was just not going to happen, and it would be the two of us. At just that time the movie “Up” came out.
"Sadly after two miscarriages we found out that our dream family was just not going to happen"
So there we were, sitting in our living room, still very raw with the grief of miscarriages and we were silent. The only thing we said to each other was that we wanted to make our adventures happen. A lot of our dream adventures involved being physically active, we both desperately wanted to climb the mountains around our beautiful province. We wanted to be able to run a 5k. We wanted to be able to do 10 pushups. Neither of us were physically fit at the time and we were both quite overweight. We both knew that if we wanted to have these kinds of adventures, we would have to radically change our lifestyle. So Brian started and I joined him a bit later.
That, my friends is how watching the movie “Up” changed our lives. We are so happy to find out all the adventures that are out there for us.
